Why you Need to add This Antioxidant Loaded Tea to Your Routine

When you think of teas packed with antioxidants, green tea or black tea might come to mind, but white tea has the most antioxidants of any type of tea. Because it undergoes the least processing of any tea, it’s able to hold onto all those antioxidants. Plus, its mild taste makes it the perfect sip for any tea drinker, whether novice or expert.

Sips by is a personalized tea discovery subscription. Each month, we match tea drinkers across the U.S. with delicious teas from over 150 global tea brands that we’re sure they’ll love. Members receive 4 teas chosen just for them in every box. Learn more about our tea subscription service.

THE ANTIOXIDANTS: CATECHINS, FLAVONOIDS, & TANNINS:

White tea contains three different types of antioxidants: catechins, flavonoids, and tannins, all with a different benefit for your health.

CATECHINS: Catechins are a unique type of antioxidant found in tea, cocoa, and berries, the most well-known being EGCG. High-quality white teas contain the highest number of catechins out of any type of tea.

FLAVONOIDS: Flavonoids are a type of phytonutrient found in fruits and veggies, and have powerful effects on reducing inflammation and boosting your immunity.

TANNINS: Tannins are what gives tea its color. As you might guess, there aren’t as many in white tea as there are in black tea, but you can still get the benefits while enjoying the lighter flavor of white tea.

Benefits:

Heart Health

The polyphenols in white tea help to relax your blood vessels as well as aiding your body in getting rid of bad cholesterol, making it a great choice for heart health. They also help to promote circulation, which also helps your heart to stay healthy.

Gut Health

Polyphenols are one of the best antioxidant groups for total body wellness, so it comes as no surprise that they help to support your digestive system, too.  These antioxidants help to increase the good bacteria in your gut while fending off the bad stuff. Plus, catechines also function as a prebiotic, meaning that they help to feed the healthy bacteria in your gut, leading to better balance.

Bone Health

White tea is also especially helpful for bone health. Catechins help to promote bone growth and slow bone breakdown. It's so effective that white tea has been shown to be helpful in preventing osteoporosis.

Stronger Immune System

The antioxidant makeup of white tea makes it great for supporting a healthy immune system.  Both tannins and catechins are naturally antimicrobial to help your body ward off illnesses. Catechins also help to reduce inflammation to keep your body healthy. Because polyphenols are so great for your gut health (and a majority of your immune system is found in your gut), they help to regulate immune response.

Better Skin

We love polyphenols for their skin-boosting benefits.  These ingredients help to protect skin from environmental damage like UV rays and pollution, helping your look fresher.

Reduced Risk of Disease

Antioxidants are important to help fight off the free radicals that contribute to disease. Tannins, in particular, have been shown to be anticarcinogenic.

Balanced Focus

Like other true teas made from the tea plant, white tea contains caffeine, but it’s balanced out by L-theanine. You get that boost of focus while still receiving the calming benefits of tea. Plus, the catechin EGCG works well with the natural caffeine in white tea to help boost your metabolism.
