How to Make Simple Syrup

How to Make Simple Syrup

WHAT IS SIMPLE SYRUP?

Simple syrup truly is as simple as it sounds: an equal ratio of sugar dissolved in water. It’s the staple sweetener for many cocktails and other drinks because of its versatility. It’s especially delicious in iced tea or lemonade because it doesn’t need to dissolve, just drizzle it in and you’re ready to sip!

WHAT KIND OF SUGAR CAN I USE TO MAKE SIMPLE SYRUP?

Granulated sugar is the basic sugar used in simple syrup because it dissolves easily and won’t affect the color of your syrup. You can also use raw cane sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, and stevia. These alternative sugars will taste just as delicious but might alter the color of your syrup and drink. Or, for a different flavor and thicker syrup you can substitute sugar altogether with honey, raw honey, or agave.

SIMPLE SYRUP RATIO

The traditional ratio of sugar to water for a simple syrup is 1:1, but don’t expect this to turn out thick like pancake syrup! If you want a thicker, sweeter syrup try a ratio of 2:1 sugar to water for a rich simple syrup. Or, if you need to make a bigger batch simply double your favorite ratio. You get the idea - these ingredients are totally changeable to your needs!

HOW DO I STORE SIMPLE SYRUP?

Store your simple syrup in a glass jar with a lid in the refrigerator.

HOW LONG DOES SIMPLE SYRUP LAST?

Homemade simple syrup will last up to 1 month in the fridge. If you want it to last longer, you can store your simple syrup in the freezer.

WHAT IS FLAVORED SIMPLE SYRUP?

Flavored simple syrup is a fun and easy way to take your favorite drink to the next level. Infuse extracts and spices like vanilla or cinnamon, or herbs and flowers like rosemary, mint, lavender, and rose petals. Want a spicy kick? Use ginger or jalapeño. You get the idea - the opportunities are endless!
