This recipe is pretty much a recipe for a homemade chai blend or a homemade ginger chai but as it turns out all the spices in chai blends have excellent cleansing properties. Cardamom, the staple in any chai, is a warming spice like cayenne that increases body temperature, which boosts metabolism. Cinnamon and ginger both balance blood sugar and cinnamon is also good for curbing appetite. Blend yourself up a spicy detox tea and savor the delicious cleanse!
CLEANSING SPICED GINGER TEA
Makes 2 glasses // Prep Time: 5 minutes // Active Time: 30 minutes
- 2 cups filtered water
- 2 tsp loose leaf or 2 sachets/bags ginger tea or black tea
- 4-6 cardamom pods, whole
- 4-6 black peppercorns, whole
- 4-6 cloves, whole
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4-6 slices fresh ginger
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup or agave nectar
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice
Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan and remove from heat and turn off stovetop. Add in the tea and let steep for 3-5 minutes. Remove (strain) the tea and then place back on the stovetop.
Add in all the spices and the ginger, and heat over low heat for 30 minutes, be sure to keep it from boiling. Strain out all the spices and add sweetener and lemon juice to taste. Enjoy it while it's hot!
