What Is Lemon Tea?

Lemon tea is well known for its refreshing, healthy citrus sip. There are tons of different types of lemon teas to try, whether it’s a tea blend already pre-flavored with citrus or lemon peel, or a lemon tea you make yourself (like in this recipe!) with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Lemon goes well with every type of tea, but the most popular flavored lemon tea blends are paired with herbal tea or green tea.

Lemon tea is delicious any time of day, but we recommend drinking lemon tea in the morning for a refreshing start to your day. Lemon tea can also be sipped in the evening or after meals as a palate cleanser, but make sure that the type of base tea in your lemon tea blend has little-to-no caffeine! Lemon balm, a lemon-scented herb from the mint family, is also one of the best herbal tisanes to drink for seasonal allergies throughout the day. Plus, tea with honey and lemon is an effective home remedy for sore throats and colds.

Benefits of Lemon & Cinnamon Tea

Lemon adds tons of health benefits to an already nutritious cup of tea. Lemons are alkalizing, which means they help restore the body’s pH balance and have powerful antibacterial properties. Lemons also promote healthy digestion and boost immunity from the high amounts of vitamin C. Both lemon juice, lemon peel, and cinnamon help balance blood sugar and have intense antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cinnamon Lemon Detox Tea Recipe

Makes 1 glass // Prep Time: 5 minutes // Active Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 2 rounded tsp loose leaf or 2 sachets/bags of your favorite tea. Use Organic Moringa Herbal Tea - Original by Miracle Tree for extra health benefits.
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-4 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1-2 tbsp honey or maple syrup or agave nectar (optional)
  • Lemon wheels for an extra lemony effect

Directions

Using 1 cup of water, brew your tea following the package instructions or reference our handy guide on How to Steep Tea to brew any kind of tea! We've added more tea in this recipe than the usual suggested brewing amount to balance out the flavors from the spices.

Combine the spices and the other cup of water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. As soon as it starts to boil, lower the heat to low so that the mixture is just steeping and not simmering. Add in the lemon juice/wheels and sweetener (if you'd like), cover, and let steep for 5-10 minutes.

Once your spices are done brewing, remove from heat and strain into a teapot or pitcher, and then add in the brewed tea. Stir, add in lemon wheels to make it look nice and give you some extra detoxing magic, and enjoy it while it's hot! Feel free to experiment with how much cinnamon or cloves you'd like to use, depending on how strong you'd like your detox tea.

Pro Tip: Did you know that you can reuse your cinnamon sticks? They can be steeped 4-5 times before they fully lose their flavor and health benefits. To reuse one, rinse it under hot water and allow it to dry. The next time you’re ready to use it, lightly run it over a grater to release the flavor. Also, you can substitute a dash of ground cinnamon in this recipe if you don't have cinnamon sticks!

Hi Rashida! We always recommend making a fresh batch every time, but it can be strained and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

How long can I store this for?

Hello: I’ve been making a Swiss Blend – 1/4 tsp of Ginger powder 1/4 tsp of cloves & a cinnamon stick , steep for 5 min’s , and I’ve added green tea to it as well , after boiling two cups of water , let it sit for about 3 min’s if the water is too hot it will destroy some of the nutrition in the green tea , water temperature should be about 170 deg’s … it’s fantastic just like that , and one can add some lemon in the cup to taste …

Hi Laura, we love using either cinnamon sticks or powder in this recipe, whichever you have on hand! You can substitute the cinnamon sticks for 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (:

Good question! Cinnamon stix or powder?
