It's been a long year, and I think it's safe to say we're all looking forward to waving goodbye to 2020. If we learned anything from 2020, it’s that a lot can happen that is out of our control - which feels overwhelming. So let’s turn the page on the stresses of last year and look forward to new beginnings! In 2021, we can focus on what we do have control over to create productive and meaningful change in our life.
We know that it’s discouraging to make a long, hopeful list of New Year’s resolutions only to have life get in the way and abandon them after a few weeks. This happens because we can’t expect ourselves to become different people overnight.
Instead, try to incorporate a new set of rituals into your life that will help you achieve your goals. Change happens over time by forming intentional habits, and even the amount of time it takes to form these habits vary by person, from three weeks to two months to half a year. Remember, it takes more effort to set a ritual than it does to write down a quick list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve, but these are your dreams so they’re worth it!
Here are five wellness rituals with strategies and simple tips that everyone can use to achieve their goals for 2021.
Whatever your goals are for 2021, focus on the why
Ask yourself: why? It’s important to think about the motivation behind your goal. Without a motivating reason, it’s easy to lose sight of what you are really trying to achieve when it gets hard to follow through.
For example, most people really want to get healthier and save money, but it’s really easy to get discouraged from actually exercising, eating healthier, or not spending money when you’re tempted with a delicious meal or see a fantastic online deal. But if you think about the reason you’re saving money, whether it’s for a new car, to pay off debt, or to take a trip with your friends, you’re more likely to follow through when it gets hard.
For each goal you want to achieve in 2021, start by sitting down with a hot mug of tea and think about your driving ‘why’ behind it so the goal means more to you than a simple check on your to-do list. Trust us, this meaningful ritual gets you into the habit of prioritizing and being more intentional and thoughtful about your everyday actions!
Write down what you want to achieve in the present tense
After you normalize thinking about the why behind your goals, get into the habit of writing them down in the present tense. People who vividly write down their goals in the first person, present tense are 1.4 times more likely to achieve them!
Think of this ritual as creating a pathway to your dreams, so it’s important to be specific and use timelines when writing them down. Your goals should be achievable within a manageable time frame, and you should create clear steps that you can take to achieve the goal.
Simple strategies can make this ritual fun and creative! If you’re crafty you can create a vision board, start a journal, or buy a cute planner that you’ll enjoy using every day. Sure, writing lists and deadlines down in notes apps and calendars are quick and efficient, but you become more accountable for your goals when you write them down!
Create a productive morning routine that works for you
Night owls, we know you’re going to groan when you hear this - but we’re not only talking about waking up early. Having more time in the day always helps to get things done, but we’re talking about simple rituals you can incorporate into your morning routine that motivate you to only hit the snooze button once.
These rituals can be as simple as making your bed every morning, planning a delicious and easy go-to breakfast, going on a short morning walk, or savoring your morning cup of tea or coffee without checking email.
Finding an easy and enjoyable ritual that helps you feel productive and energized from the start of your day will have a huge impact on your mindset for the rest of the day. So if you can follow it most mornings then you’re already ahead!
Unplug for at least 15 minutes a day (with a cup of tea!)
Completely unplug from technology and incorporate 15 minutes or more of quiet time into your day. This simple practice rewards you with numerous physical and mental health benefits - it will help you be present, relax, and even reduce the strain on your eyes and body.
To make this a ritual that you look forward to, begin your quiet time by making tea! This habit will help you build in a set period of time to be mindful while you’re enjoying your rejuvenating cup of tea.
If this practice doesn’t work for you, there are tons of other ways to ease stress and disconnect from technology, even it’s just on your lunch break. Taking a walk (and rewarding yourself with a cup of tea when you get back!), practicing a set of yoga stretches, or something else that you enjoy doing will help you incorporate a set time to disconnect every day!
Set yourself up to succeed, but give yourself grace when you don’t
2020 taught us how to deal with the unexpected and make the best of difficult situations. Going into 2021, fostering wellness rituals will provide important consistency and control to our day, no matter what’s going on in the world or what plans get changed.
Set yourself up for success by thinking through your list of goals for 2021 (no dream is too big or too small!) and write down the why and how. The rest of the wellness rituals are meant to help you clear small spaces in your day for healthy habits that make you feel positive, accomplished, and rested - and this mindset gets you closer to completing your goals!
But sometimes...it’s hard. Fitting new rituals into your already busy day might seem like an impossible task at first, so if it just doesn’t happen some days that’s completely okay! Allow yourself to forget or mess up without getting discouraged because creating new rituals is an ongoing process that will take time and perseverance.
A FRESH START
Overall, these self-care rituals will keep you motivated and inspired to actively pursue your goals and remind you to stay intentional about your dreams. But remember, you don’t have to change everything on January 1, 2021, because every day is a new beginning and a chance for a fresh start. If you don’t have time to map out your goals or unplug one day, take the opportunity to reset and try again tomorrow!
