Mythology and tea are inseparable. In fact, the very inception of tea is rooted in the story of the Bodhidharma who tore off his eyebrows to prevent sleep and drowsiness from disturbing his quest for self-mastery. The eyebrows then became the very first tea tree, symbolizing its ability to harness focus and tranquility.

The same is true for this particular tea, whose name refers to the impossible love between Tislit (a young princess from Ait Ya’za) and Isli (a knight from Ait Brahim). Due to the constant struggles between these two tribes, their love was forbidden leaving them no choice but to flee to the mountain of Isslan. In their melancholic state, they cried for days and the tears that flowed down the mountain filled the two lakes that bare their name today.

Stories like these are one of the reasons SAYRA came into being. We are all connected to the stories of our ancestors and the preservation of Moroccan heritage and cultural mythologies are a driving force within Sayra’s mission. The mint tea ceremony, in particular, is an iconic symbol of hospitality and friendliness - of a simpler time where sharing, warmth, and creativity were basic truths in a vivid existence. Enter their own green tea and mint blend, Tea Tislit.

While this beverage is traditionally brewed hot, it still has an immense cooling effect. This is because menthol (an organic compound found in mint) activates an important sensory protein called TRPM8, which allows us to feel the sensation of coldness. So even though we are consuming a hot beverage, the presence of mint will trick our brain into thinking it’s cooler inside our mouths than it actually is! This is also one of the reasons mint is great for digestion, our sensation of coolness allows our stomach to find respite in the process of converting food into energy. Science!

The idea that spawned Fava Tea Co. occurred on a hot June evening, so it only makes sense that this particular blend is one of our June teas of the month! They are a family owned business that takes pride in ushering a new paradigm of tea - one that allows for playfulness, relaxation, and devoid of the stuffy etiquette of the past. They say it best when claiming “This isn’t your Grandmother’s tea.”

This embodies the Sunny Sangria Black Tea blend, which is a playful dance between black tea, blackberries, and exotic fruits. When tasting this tea, you are transported to a summer scene where festivities and joyfulness fill the air. There are physiological congruences to support this vision, as black tea offers many cardiovascular benefits, including the prevention of LDL Cholesterol oxidation. Tulsi — also known as the “queen of herbs,” “holy basil,” and the “incomparable plant”— has a plethora of health benefits due to an active ingredient found in its leaves: eugenol. It also contains ursolic acid and carvacrol, both of which serve as antimicrobials, and contains many antioxidants to boost the immune system. It has been utilized as a sacred herb within Ayurveda practices for thousands of years and can also help with:

  • Stress
  • Weight loss
  • Headaches
  • Respiratory issues
  • Skin and hair issues
  • Digestive system issues
  • Cardiovascular issues

Moringa, also an herb from the foothills of the Himalayas, is equally as impressive. In fact, the National Institute of Health awarded it plant of the year in 2008, citing its potential to reverse multiple environmental dilemmas and provide for unmet human needs. Some of its more surprising qualities include having:

  • two times the amount of protein of yogurt
  • four times the amount of vitamin A as carrots
  • three times the amount of potassium as bananas
  • four times the amount of calcium as cow's milk
  • seven times the amount of vitamin C as oranges

Together, these two potent herbs form a genuine combination in Tulsi Moringa of vibrant living and ethical farming, which is a primary mission of Organic India. Not only do they wish to be a vehicle of consciousness for the global market, but their dedication to sustainable practices allows us all to connect with mother earth as we sip on their delicious tea.

Iced tea is an essential summer staple for those living in the Southern Continental United States. However, it wasn’t until two sisters (Claudia Maria and Jessica Michelle) harnessed a Guatemalan delicacy that allowed this staple to diversify in wonderful ways.

Rosa de Jamaica (Hibiscus) is a tropical flower rich in vitamin C, A, iron, calcium, and antioxidants. It can reduce stress, inflammation, and high blood pressure while also acting as a natural coolant and thirst quencher. It has a strong tart flavor that is well suited for iced brewing and combines well with the sweetness of fruit, such as a pineapple!

We love the story of Two Sisters Tea because of its simplicity. Claudia and Jessica wanted to share a childhood delicacy with their communities and offer a healthy alternative to mothers everywhere. We lift our cups to you lovely sisters!
